Backyard (2013)

In Hans Op de Beeck’s Backyard, even the celebratory flags are rendered in monotonous grey. Whether the show is set in Florida or Flanders is irrelevant. After all, the work is not based on an actual photograph, but rather derives its universality from a kind of collage of remembered images. Op de Beeck does not incorporate found objects in his installations. His spaces are expressions of reality in condensed form and should be read as mental images whereby the imagining of a backyard – the backyard of a Western consumer – reveals a truth about the human condition.
