A slumbering sense of dissatisfaction with time shines through in Hans Op de Beeck's multimedia oeuvre. His videos, photographs, sculptures, installations, short stories and drawings are not about art for art's sake, but on the contrary try to reveal something about the human condition, about the sometimes tragicomic clumsiness with which we shape the world around us. In his works, Op de Beeck constantly flirts with the thin line between the serious and the ridiculous and, in this way, seeks a way of dealing with the unbearable lightness of existence. It is truly art as catharsis: the problematic or tragic side of the image is inextricably linked to a consoling quality.
