Contr'archives (2011)
MIXED TECHNIQUE
In Contr'archives, the viewer is introduced to three ways of “archiving” used by the artist throughout his oeuvre. The three stacks of books on the floor belong to the series Dead Letters, in which Denmark cuts up books and crosses out the text in them so that they literally and figuratively become a collection of dead letters. Against the back wall of the room, Denmark mounted five hard plastic boxes in which he arranged nine rolled-up (and therefore illegible) magazines from a renowned art magazine each time. These works join a series in which each work was given the title of the magazine in question. The plastic bags filled with fabric placed on the floor on either side of the room are in turn part of Daily Dust, a series in which the artist has reduced the delusion of the day to dust.
