MUSEUM TO SCALE 1/7

Denmark

(Wilrijk, 1950 )

Under the pseudonym Denmark, self-taught artist Mark Robbroeckx has been building a particularly consistent body of work since the 1970s. Over the past few decades, he has become an exceptional representative of installation art in Belgium. After Denmark completed his studies in Art History and Archaeology at the State University of Ghent in 1972, he began crossing out texts and tearing and cutting up books in the latter days of conceptual art. Denmark's artistic practice is that of a contrarian archivist more concerned with the banal and temporary than with the essentials that must stand the test of time. Neatly rolled up in Plexiglas boxes or in bags, and turned to dust, Denmark preserves the remnants of consumer society and in this way makes his viewers think about transience.
