PAINTING ON GLASS
Filip et Stefanie is a so-called eglomisé or behind-glass painting. Although Francis did not invent this technique, painting on glass frames within his experimental research into the basic conditions of painting. At the same time, it also tells a thing or two about the extent to which the interpretation of an image is determined by preconceptions, for example about gender. After all, who is Filip and who is Stefanie? And what is the relationship between these two persons? With his hard-to-read, abstracted figuration, the artist confronts the viewer with deeply ingrained prejudices.
