Untitled (2013)
MIXED TECHNIQUE
Untitled can be read as a 21st-century pastiche of The Scream, the painting in which Edvard Munch in 1893 depicted his abyssal doubt and despair. Kamagurka imitates the color palette, style and even figurative representation of the Norwegian symbolist, but at the same time charges the scene with humor by including a folksy discussion about the origins of life. Which came first: the chicken or the egg? Or is the sun in the background - which looks suspiciously like an egg - the true source of life on earth? Kamagurka may not provide a conclusive answer with his oeuvre, but he does stimulate a relatability that can puncture the unbearable seriousness of existential torments.
