Bert De Beul's contribution for Museum to Scale is untitled, as are the miniature works included and many of his other paintings. The painter does not want to direct the viewer by naming his images. On the contrary, he leaves room for interpretation. This is an extension of his vision and practice. Every rendering is subjective for The Executioner, influenced by memories, impressions and associations. During the painting process he tries step by step to get closer to the image he has in mind, often using a photograph as inspiration. The canvases show corners of spaces, windows overlooking an indeterminate landscape, a courtyard. Vaguely, they remind the viewer - as does the artist - of something he has seen in reality. However, due to the brown-gray palette (which again lies like a dense fog over the works) and the lack of distinctive details, the image does not become concrete. However, the strange cropping or surprising perspective literally creates new angles.
