JE REVIENS DANS 5 MINUTES (2011)

MIXED TECHNIQUE

Everything in Pierre Alechinsky’s museum room is painted. A red accent in the middle of the central wall serves as the focal point of a monumental composition of 16 outlined compositions in black and white. They are evidence of the lyrical style that characterises the Belgian Cobra artist. His knowledge of the poetry of imperfect beauty – an oriental influence – is made manifest in the self-evident power of the loose stripes of colour on the side walls. The finishing touch to the ensemble is a copy of Gerrit Rietveld’s famous Zig Zag chair, with a note on the seat: ‘Je reviens dans 5 minutes’. Is the text a nod to the casual savoirvivre of the French or is Alechinsky applying for a position as an attendant in his own museum room?
