Angel Vergara
(Mieres (S),
1958 )
Angel Vergara is a Belgian artist of Spanish origin who has lived in Brussels for over thirty years. In 2011 he represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale. In installations, performances, sculptures, sketches and videos he thematises the economic aspects of the world of art and the position of the creative artist in it. The tension between elite art perception and popular culture is also a thread through his multimedia oeuvre. Whatever medium Vergara uses, his attachment to and mastery of painting always shines through. Since the 1988 Venice Biennale, Straatman – the alter ego Vergara employs when he does performances under a white sheet – has been popping up in public spaces from Antwerp to Tokyo.
