Kelly Schacht

(Roeselare, 1983 )

Originality and interpretation are key concepts in Kelly Schacht’s work. She stages, dissects and puts into perspective the creation of a work of art, the unconscious mechanisms that guide aesthetic experience and the status of art. Crucial to her practice is the exploration of the relationship between the work and context of its exhibition with spectators in a (public) space, and the private, intimate way in which that relationship evolves. In Schacht’s sometimes surrealistic-looking objects and installations, meaning is in a constant state of flux. By involving colleagues, actors, designers or her audience, she gives way to new interpretations and experiences. But echoes of previous works also feed into this continuous dialogue and generation of meaning, as does the use of language. Text often triggers a work. Schacht plays with language, deconstructs it and questions the relationship between signified and signifier. Her work demands we (re)construct meaning while looking. In 2011 Kelly Schacht was laureate of the Belgian Art Prize.a
