Averse to dominant art movements such as Zero and conceptual art, since the 1960s Fred Bervoets has been tinkering with a consistent body of work that always remains true to a narrative figuration. On usually monumental canvases and etching plates, Bervoets captures in a direct and expressive style scenes derived from his (sometimes flawed) living environment. His artistic vitality makes him not only a living legend in Antwerp, but also an esteemed teacher at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts. Bervoets' name also resonates internationally, which was reflected, among other things, in the exhibition Sanguine, curated by Luc Tuymans. Luc Tuymans on Baroque at the Fondazione Prada in Milan (2018). Adriaan Raemdonck and his gallery De Zwarte Panter have been a home for Fred Bervoets for decades and a road companion on his artistic journey.
