Chantal Maes

Chantal Maes studied photography at the Higher Institute for Decorative Arts at La Cambre and is a senior lecturer at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. In portraits of people and, more recently, landscapes, Maes often focuses on the elusive moment between two states. By suspending that transition in time or space in her image or holding on to the moment at which something is about to happen, she carefully alludes to what is going on beneath the surface. The viewer gains an eye for that which escapes observation but nevertheless delineates the meaning of the captured image. Like her photographs, Chantal Maes' videos - which often show only words - subtly draw attention to deeper meanings and sensitivities between the lines.
