In sculptures, assemblages and installations, Geoffrey de Beer emphasizes the unexpected, autonomous beauty of his materials (glass, marble, tiles). This “superficial” experience of beauty forces the viewer to question critically the transcendent character traditionally ascribed to the experience of beauty. De Beer's oeuvre further raises fundamental questions about authorship and about the uniqueness of the artist and the work of art. It is precisely in this area that he finds connection with the Surrealists. With them, De Beer shares an inexhaustible fascination for images, parables and riddles.
