Immediately after his training at the Higher Architecture Institute Sint-Lucas in Brussels, Luc Deleu cast off the straightjacket of architecture to devote himself to a cross-pollination between art, architecture and urbanism. Luc Deleu takes leave of architecture was thus a meaningful title for his first exhibition, in 1970 at the Antwerp gallery Vacuüm. It was not really a farewell, however, because that same year he founded T.O.P. (Turn On Planning) office. Deleu's practice starts from a commitment to current issues: the growth of the world population, unbalanced food production, environmental pollution and the friction between individual and society. In 1972, for example, Deleu was also involved in a new construction project of the University Institution of Antwerp (UIA) in which he wanted to transform warships into a floating university. Together with his wife Laurette Gillemot (b. 1946), he still develops visionary, almost utopian ideas today. With Luc Deleu & T.O.P. office FUTURE PLANS 1970-2020, Deleu was given a retrospective exhibition at the VAi (Flemish Architecture Institute) in 2021.
