It is not easy to pigeonhole Peter De Meyer's carefully constructed oeuvre. De Meyer plays by the unwritten rules of minimal art and conceptual art, stripping them of a sometimes suffocating seriousness. In this way, he exposes a lack of relatability, humor, poetry or romantic inspiration in the art world. In his installations, sculptures, objets trouvés and conceptual interventions, De Meyer introduces small shifts in context and meaning. Through a subtle play of associations with objects, he punctures common patterns of expectation. In this way, De Meyer unmasks, among other things, the vanity that lurks behind the stereotypical “roles” of gallerist, art lover and artist. By constantly putting his audience on the wrong foot, the artist invites the viewer to approach 'Art' (with a capital letter) with a healthy sense of perspective.
